Agreed. I love Ritual de lo Habitual too now, but so much of it was overplayed when I was growing up that I never really gave the band a chance. My big brother passed that cd on to me when I was like 12, but I cant remember ever really listening to it. Then a few years ago while I was driving across the country I got sick of everything on my ipod and found Ritual while flipping through my cds albums. I popped it in and it has pretty much stayed in my glove box or cd drive ever since. After that I downloaded all their other albums. Ritual is definatly more cohesive, which is usually a good thing, especially for driving music, but Nothing Shocking has so many amazing songs on it and I love how all over the place it is, kind of like me. The sudden shifts in mood from song to song is so hard to pull off and still end up with and album that you can listen to all the way through, but they really nailed it here. I would have to put Nothing Shocking in my top 10 favorite albums.

Summertime Rolls, yea. Fell off the top of a Bobcat a few years ago at 3 am while I was singing that song to nobody in particular (and fortunately not the cops). Got a black eye from the face plant. Good times.

'Ritual is definatly more cohesive'.. i agree. it was definitely their most highly produced album. it was their 'hit' album with mtv songs for the masses. however, even their pop songs (been caught stealing, jane says) are truly original, gripping and appeal to casual fans and die hards

I agree about Ritual. Don't get me wrong, I love that album too. I heard Been Caught Stealing way too many times growing up and always resisted liking Jane's because of that. There was always so much hype around that song Jane Says, and Stop that I never bothered to listen to any of there other stuff. However, when I did start to listen to their full albums I was completely surprised by how much I liked them and how original and complex their songs are. Now I even have a soft spot for their big hits and poppier songs. To be honest, I pretty much lover everything they have ever done. Even Strays, which is probably their weakest release has some great stuff on it. I just got Great Escape Artist and was so happy that they had returned to a more original sound and love how they incorporated electronic elements into their sound.
